Smoke Alarm Day, 1 December
Test the smoke alarms in your home
Dear resident,
since 1 January 2026, smoke alarms have been the housing company's responsibility: the housing company provides the alarms and keeps them in working order. Your statutory duty as a resident is to report any faults you notice without delay.
We still ask everyone to test the alarms in their home regularly: press the test button until the alarm sounds. The Ministry of the Interior's guidance suggests testing, for example, once a month. Smoke Alarm Day on 1 December is a good reminder.
Let us know if an alarm
- does not sound when tested,
- chirps briefly now and then (usually a sign of a low battery), or
- is missing or has been taken down.
Please don't remove an alarm or its battery, even if it chirps. Tell us and the fault will be fixed.
